State: Cinema

Now Showing or Coming Soon? It really doesn't matter at State Cinema Nelson. As spotted here in the foyer recently, an enjoyable night at the movies is all about a stress-free state of mind.

Taking the piss

This is an art in itself when in the bush, as demonstrated by this in-the-wildness creative and humorous window display at Nelson's Hunting & Fishing store.

Love locking

Love padlocks (or love locks) are a custom where padlocks are affixed to a fence, gate, bridge or other public fixture by sweethearts at an increasing number of locations around the world as a symbol of their everlasting love. Lovers unite and lock more than lips ...it's started, as all good things do, with just one, spotted recently on Collingwood Street Bridge. Will we see love grow?

Windblown art branches out

This well known Nelson icon has been given a windblown artistic final touch that we suspect might be Mother Nature having the last laugh.

Fearless flower art

This fearless Snapdragon squeezing out of a concrete crack on Collingwood Street bridge, and playing chicken with road traffic daily for months now, is a brilliant reminder that anything is possible. When you are courageous, the flower is always mightier than the car.

Why art?

Wise words found at Lustre Gallery in Collingwood Street. Art then, allows us to discover the essence of who we are and bring it to life, so we can live at full throttle beyond the limitations of convention and bask in our unlimitedness.

Art on the run

Illuminating flour art lights up the runway for hardy Nelson harriers running wild on cold winter nights clad with spotlights, bugles, trumpets and dogs.

Outside the box

That Trouble & Fox has come to our attention before. This time we're wildly impressed by the foxy fluro window boxes strung out to boot. It's the fine art of being outside the box while remaining within it...

Art in the park

This delicate, textured and anonymous work of doggy doo art was found sparkling in the early morning sunshine recently. Constructed on a biodegradable canvas, it's a wildly collaborative work between the anonymous and relieved dog, and local creative micro organisms. It also adds a whole new meaning to the name Hairy McCleary and the expression 'fine art'.

heavenly humour

When asked the question "what would Jesus have said?"
some wildly varied and witty options sneaked out in a Nelson store.
When we lighten up, all sorts of miracles can happen.

Fashion hopefuls

Outrageously gorgeous fashion styles are being sneaked out by Sally, Bev and Marg. These voluptuous straw fashionistas recently planted their latest winter styles, curvacious bodies and fab poses at the Place for Plants Nursery Ltd in Hope.

Keen to have a lasting impact on fashion individuality, they stay in these poses for hours amongst the fragrant plants and flowers. Looks like sunflowers are the latest fascinaters and serial handbag coordination is a must.

Curiously, there seems to be a facial resemblance here - sisters in style, or perhaps this is the latest popular model look...?

Hauling ass

Spotted leaving Z Richmond service station after refuelling with his wee pony pal, this donkey has his hind legs obstinately in place despite all the talk of having its ass on the line in this seemingly all-purpose, burrowed cart.

And if you consider this to be a half-arsed mode of transport, then you would be wrong, because obviously this fella ‘aint no mule. But with the charming cross adorning his strong grey back ...well, perhaps it’s an Easter thing?

Insatiable appetite of ego

This moving feast of wisdom in Nelson's Buxton carpark reminds us when the insatiable appetite of the ego takes over and leaves us searching for answers in all the wrong places, and hungry for more crap or more full-of-it, then no body wins. Pig out on the smorgasbord of your own wisdom and guidance and you will feel full and happy and big enough to let others shine too. That's wicked alright.

The hut that X built

Submitted by Gemma Claire

Walk along Tahuna Beach. Yes, it's a tough job but someone's got to do it. Keep walking. Just a little farther. You'll eventually come to an incredible driftwood hut. An as yet unidentified builder has put serious effort into this architectural enigma. The wood is criss-crossed tight enough to make the structure robust, yet the spaces between allow glorious Nelson sunlight to sneak in. The driftwood has been driven deep into the sand, which makes a lone constructor unlikely. Grassy dune accomplice theories, anyone?

The hut's intimate interior is kitted out with log seats. It's a perfect spot for shade-seekers. A writer whose ideas have dried up might sit here, stare at the glistening ocean and gain inspiration. An artist could lug an easel in and paint a seascape. With Valentine's Day coming, surely someone romantically inclined will use the quaint cabin as a venue for a picnic. On a clear night, you could bed down on the cool sand floor. Sleeping and star-gazing only, please – latex mementos of passion would definitely spoil this hideaway.

So, does anyone know who built this hut? Perhaps it's the work of construction pixies who come out only at night...

Dangerous dunny doings

Whatever you Nelsonians are constructing and brewing around here, be cautious, and make sure you have full authorisation before entering. Alternate options for unauthorised people are currently unknown, but if your contribution is golden then perhaps the signage is insinuating that your patronage of this cubicle is okay?

How do you like your joinery?

Definitely not a wooden sense of humour spotted here in Nelson. In fact, this caused my friend to mutter that she could do with a bit of well hung joinery herself. It remains a mystery as to whether this name refers to the prowess of cupboard doors or the bestower of them, but we like to think that it's all finely finished.

Rusty iron-clad exhibitionist

Put out to pasture, this ever-evolving and unlikely slow art evolution in The Glen, Nelson, is a collaboration between the paddock, sea air and wrought iron, and reminds us that art is every where.
